First, keep your current job. Hone your photographic skills. Consider part-time training courses aimed at commercial photography. Study published work. Refine your thoughts on which area of photography is likely to be most rewarding, both financially (as a career) and from a personal point of view.
Be aware that in the current financial climate even experienced photographers are having to work extra hard to make a living. I recommend you consider it a part-time job, at least until you gain experience and credibility.
