BFP joins British Photographic Council

The Bureau of Freelance Photographers has joined other leading photographic organisations as a member of the recently-established umbrella body, the British Photographic Council.

The aim of the BPC is to allow representatives of member bodies to discuss matters of mutual interest and concern. Alongside the BFP, BPC members include NUJ, BAPLA, AoP, BPPA, EPUK, CIoJ and several others.

Declared common interests include the protection, development and promotion of the rights and interests of photographers, as well as those involved in the distribution of their work, and of the bodies that represent them.

This includes such issues as copyright legislation, orphan works, licensing agreements and the rights of photographers to undertake their work without hindrance or harassment.

As and when considered appropriate, the BPC will make representations to Government, the European Commission and other relevant authorities, or otherwise take action to protect and promote the interests of working photographers.

Another important aspect of the BPC’s remit is the improvement and encouragement of best practice in matters related to the use of photographs, employment and commissioning of photographers, and the distribution of their work.

The establishment of such a body means that photographers and their representatives now have a much stronger voice than would be the case if each organisation had to argue their case individually.
